The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works an additional $8 million to modify and complete work on the composite deckhouse of the DDG 1001, the future USS Michael Monsoor.
The vessel is the second in a three-ship line of Zumwalt-class stealth destroyers. The Navy truncated the line for cost reasons after committing to three ships, reverting to contracting for less expensive Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
The deckhouse, built at Huntington Ingalls Industries in Gulfport, Mississippi, arrived at the Bath shipyard by barge in September.
