Warships sail to eastern Africa

Talwar class FFGFour Indian Navy (IN) ships from the Mumbai-based Western Naval Command have set out on a two-month-long overseas deployment (OSD) to friendly nations in east Africa, with one of the warships to later proceed for a military exercise with the South African and Brazilian navies near the South African coast.

According to IN officers, INS Mumbai (destroyer), INS Teg and INS Talwar (guided missile frigates), and INS Deepak (fleet replenishment tanker) set sail for the OSD last week under the command of Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet Rear Admiral R. Hari Kumar.

The flotilla will visit countries in the southern Indian Ocean and is scheduled to visit Antisiranana in Madagascar, Mombasa in Kenya, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, St. Denis of the French-owned Reunion Island, Port Louis in Mauritius, Port Victoria in Seychelles, Nacalla in Mozambique and Simon’s Town in South Africa.
