The South American giant is in the process of exploring major oil fields off its shores that could make it one of the world's top petroleum exporters.

The new submarines aim to protect that resource, said the navy official coordinating the US$10-billion project, Gilberto Max Roffe Hirshfeld.

  1. The project would be costing far more than "US$10-billion".

    Brazil's need to enrich the uranium to naval reactor levels may involve Brazil in major proliferation political-legal problems - especially with the IAEA-UN and the US.

    Protecting oil fields with nuclear/conventional submarines? Maybe they also need tanks to deal with those pesky other country migrating birds?
