The acquisition of 126 fighter jets, dubbed as the mother of all defence deals, may not happen in either this or the next fiscal year. The IAF, which has been waiting for the multi-role Rafale fighter jets to contain its dwindling fighter squadron strength, had initiated the acquisition process in 2007.
At present, commercial negotiations are on with the French manufacturer of the jets. The negotiations started in the first quarter of 2012. However, they are far from conclusion. Sources denied that the number of fighter jets would be scaled down to accommodate the deal this fiscal.
“The option is certainly not on the table. Also one has to remember that the RfP was issued for 126 fighter jets. To alter the number of aircraft would require the process to start from scratch,” sources said.
