2nd fighter jet unit eyed for Naha base
To strengthen the defense of the Nansei Islands, including the Senkakus, the government plans to deploy an additional unit of fighter jets at the Air Self-Defense Force’s base in Naha under a new defense buildup program, it was unveiled Wednesday.
The new program sets out plans for SDF troop deployments and major defense equipment over the next five years. The government plans to increase the flight squadron at the base from the current one unit, comprising about 20 F-15 fighters, to two.
The government unveiled the outline at a joint meeting of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s National Defense Division and a related panel on Wednesday morning.
