Building a fourth air warfare destroyer (AWD) would be strategically foolish without a very clear justification, a senior defence analyst warns.Dr Mark Thomson, budget analyst with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), said latest calls for an extra AWD came from shipbuilders and unions as as means of protecting skills and jobs.
They say a fourth AWD would bridge the so-called "valley of death", providing ongoing work in the years between the end of the AWD program in 2019 and start of construction of new submarine and Anzac frigate replacements.
