Google Earth images reveal China's first domestic carrier

China's first indigenous aircraft carrier program has been studied in detail by US military analysts Peter W Singer and Jeffrey Lin in an article published in the Time magazine on Sept. 14.
Back in the Cold War era, American analysts relied on annual military parades or reconnaissance satellite images to study the newest weapon systems of the Soviet Union. However, with the birth of Google Earth, defense watchers around the world are now using the open-source technology to map out China's military development.
After studying a Google Earth satellite photo of Jiangnan Shipyard located in Shanghai's Changxing islands on Aug. 1, Lin found the module of a large vessel with a width of 51 meters and a starboard gap of around 12 meters long and seven to nine meters wide.
