The Coalition will try to extend the life of Australia's trouble-plagued Collins Class submarines, consider buying unmanned drones and proceed with the acquisition of Joint Strike Fighters under a defence policy that rules out further military spending cuts.
Announcing the policy at Sydney's Holsworthy Barracks today, Tony Abbott said the Coalition would “rebuild” the defence force after Labor's budget cuts, shifting resources “from the back office to the front line”, and restoring defence spending to 2 per cent of GDP by the end of the decade.
He said the Coalition would deepen Australia's defence relationship with the United States, and would be open to all requests for cooperation with “our best ally”.
