Navy awards contracts to design carrier-based unmanned aircraft

X-47BFour firms have each received $15-million contracts to begin developing unmanned aircraft that would operate from U.S. Navy aircraft carriers, the Pentagon announced Aug. 14.

The contracts call for Boeing, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc., Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to complete preliminary design reviews of the future Unmanned Carrier Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) aircraft. The work is to be done by June 2014. All four companies have already done studies to help the Navy determine the way forward for UCLASS.

“The objective of the UCLASS system is to enhance aircraft carrier/air wing operations by providing a responsive, world-wide presence via an organic, sea-based unmanned aerial system, with persistent intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting, and strike capabilities,” the Pentagon said.
