Britain’s Nuclear Deterrence Dilemma

Trafalgar class submarineWith no adversary to deter, should Britain spend billions of pounds to have a nuclear force. The ageing submarines-based nuclear forces of Britain are a case in point.

Hunter-killer submarine force is considered the pride of Royal British Navy. The force has submarines that were built during the Cold War to spy, defend and attack the Warsaw Pact adversaries.

Unlike the U.S. and former Soviet Union, UK has traditionally lagged in submarine technology and has settled with inferior alternatives that did not have long life. The average age of British nuclear powered subs has been 15 to 20 years.
