Phantom Eye unmanned aircraft to aid Missile Defense Agency

Phantom EyeBoeing has lined up the first payload customer for its Phantom Eye high-altitude, long endurance unmanned aircraft, the Pentagon announced late June 5.

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has awarded Boeing $6.8 million to fly an MDA payload aboard Phantom Eye starting in late 2013.

The payload will collect "vibration disturbance data," which could lay groundwork for a new airborne laser weapon system someday, MDA spokeswoman Debra Christman said June 6.
