Australia may host US communications 'assets'

Australia will consider hosting new US Defence communications capabilities to help Washington's efforts to boost its focus on the Asia-Pacific region, according to a draft copy of next year's defence white paper.

The document confirms the government will build 12 submarines in Adelaide despite speculation that budget cuts would force it to reduce that number. The draft document, which will form the basis of the defence white paper to be released by the middle of next year, commits Australia to buy the troubled Joint Strike Fighters, but does not specify a final number.

Because of JSF delays and cost overruns, the government is expected to purchase 24 more FA/18 Super Hornets next year, sharply reducing its eventual order of JSFs, known as the F-35.
