Rumble of jets returns near Fentress in Chesapeake


Fentress Naval Air Landing Field was closed in December 2011 for a $19 million project to replace the pavement and lighting systems
The window-shaking rumble of fighter jets returned to Chesapeake on Tuesday when an F/A-18 Super Hornet touched down at Fentress Naval Auxiliary Landing Field for the first time since it closed 10 months ago for runway construction.

The airfield, an auxiliary to Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, is a practice runway for Navy pilots honing their skills at landing on aircraft carriers.

Pilots pull in, touch down and immediately take off again, then loop around to do six to 10 touch-and-gos in a row.
