HMS York decommissioned in Portsmouth

HMS York |Type 42 destroyer HMS York has been decommissioned at a ceremony in Portsmouth some 27 years after entering service with the Royal Navy.

The ship was launched in 1982 and commissioned in August 1985, but is now to be replaced by one of the Type 45 air defence destroyers.

HMS York joined operations in the Persian Gulf four times in the 1990s and provided air cover to HMS Ark Royal during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
