Michelle Obama sponsors first-ever ALL-FEMALE nuclear submarine named after her home state of Illinois

Michelle ObamaFirst Lady Michelle Obama has agreed to sponsor a future submarine named after her home state that will be staffed by an all-female crew.

The White House has announced that Mrs Obama has accepted an invitation to be the backer of the USS Illinois, a Virginia-class submarine being built in Groton, Connecticut, and Newport News, Virginia.

The new nuclear-powered boat is expected to join the fleet in late 2015.

  1. I read every post - thank you for doing all of this work. This particular story is not accurate. 1) There aren't enough women in the submarine training pipeline to fully crew a submarine. 2) There aren't any nuclear trained women officers who are senior enough to command a submarine. 3) This situation won't be materially different in 2015.

  2. It sounds too far-fetched to be true, and it is. Despite rumors reported by My Fox DC and The Hill on Monday, the Navy is not staffing Virginia-class submarine Illinois with the first-ever all female submarine crew.
