The U.S. ballistic missile defense system planned for Europe continues to be the subject of harsh criticism by Moscow, even after President Barack Obama’s adopted in September 2009 the European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA).
In January 2012 Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned Washington that, if the US attempted to deploy any ballistic missile defense systems in Europe, Moscow could withdraw from the New START Treaty (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty), which entered into force on February 5, 2011 and is expected to last until 2021, and deploy Iskander missiles, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, in Luga, a small city in the outside St. Petersburg in the Leningrad Region.
Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s Ambassador to NATO and Medvedev’s Special Envoy for Missile Defense until December 23, 2011, did not refrain from criticizing Washington’s plans.
