The Scottish naval base currently used to arm submarines with Trident nuclear missiles is the only site suitable for the task and building another could take up to a decade, ministers have been told.Alex Salmond, the Scottish First Minister, has set out a timetable that could see Scotland vote on independence by 2014. David Cameron wants the referendum held sooner and may challenge Mr Salmond’s proposed referendum question.
The recent moves have caused alarm among defence chiefs, who are worried about the consequences for the Armed Forces.
