China denies any military role of WA base

China has declared it poses no military threat to Australia and described as "hype and exaggeration" claims that it is using a West Australian satellite ground station to help locate Australian and US warships in the region.

The claims were made by the nation's foremost expert on space-based espionage, Des Ball, who said the government may have unwittingly acted against the national interest by allowing China's space program to use a ground station in Mingenew.

"This ground station would be vital in helping China's space-based listening devices precisely locate the electronic emissions from aircraft carriers, destroyers and other navy ship," he said.
