Austal Cuts Out Next Ship
Machines cut the first pieces of metal for the USS Jackson--Austal's third of the LCS program. Their first ship, the Independence, was commissioned more than a year and a half ago--it's been undergoing sea tests. Rust was discovered near the propulsion system but Austal officials say not to worry.
“LCS is the most affordable viable option for the navy it's not unusual for a prototype ship to have problems, it's not a reason to kill a program,” says Austal CEO Joe Rella.
Some in congress have been critical of LCS regarding performance, cost and getting the ships in on time. Austal officials say it's not uncommon to discover problems during the test phase.
