Extending life of one Nimrod to cost £4m

Nimrod R1Extending the service life of a single Nimrod spy plane to support operations in Libya will cost £4 million, ministers have said.

The Nimrod R1, due to be grounded on 1 April, will remain in use until the end of June. The Ministry of Defence also delayed the withdrawal of two Hercules transport planes and HMS Cumberland.

Defence equipment minister Peter Luff said: "A single Nimrod R1 surveillance aircraft, two C-130K Hercules transport aircraft and the Type 22 frigate HMS Cumberland have had their service lives extended in response to the conflict in Libya.
