China is beefing up its ocean surveillance with new staff and inspection ships, giving it more muscle to deal with maritime territorial disputes with neighboring countries.China Marine Surveillance, the country's ocean monitoring agency, will hire more than 1,000 officers this year, bringing its total force to over 10,000, state-owned newspaper China Daily reported yesterday.
It will also buy 36 inspection ships over the next five years to boost its currently 300-strong fleet, the agency's deputy director Sun Shuxian told the newspaper.
