Once it enters service, the integrated-mission-system (IMS) version of the Canadian Air Force’s new CH-148 Cyclone will set the standard for remote-sensing military helicopters. The sensation is often the same for many aviators: nervousness, a clenched body and one foot fighting the other. When a pilot is flying on the fringe of his or her experience, it can sometimes feel like the aircraft is the one doing the driving.
For Capt. Ave Pyne of the 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron of Canada's Air Force, his version of this experience occurred on one of his first days at sea, training for anti-submarine warfare in the venerable Sikorsky Sea King.
