Cruiser Monterey first to deploy missile defense system

Ticonderoga-classThe Norfolk-based guided-missile cruiser Monterey will deploy the first sea-based ballistic missile defense system under the European Phased Adaptive Approach announced by the Obama administration in 2009.

Crew size: 24 officers, 340 enlisted sailors
Leader: Capt. James Kilby
Location of deployment: Mediterranean Sea
Deployment date: Monday
Return date: Expected six-month deployment

This is the first phase of a long-range plan to protect deployed U.S. forces and parts of Europe against ballistic missile threats from the Middle East, particularly Iran.
