The Army, Navy and Royal Air Force's chiefs will be told within the month exactly how much of the burden each service will have to shoulder and will then have to decide how to make the savings.The cuts are necessary because of a massive gap between the MoD's financial commitments for the financial year which begins in April and its allocated budget.
Defence sources said the department's planning for 2011-12 had identified a significant gap of "several hundreds of millions of pounds".
