Russia to use Mistral ships in Pacific Fleet to protect South Kurile Islands

Mistral-class Amphibious assault shipRussia will use Mistral ships in the Pacific Fleet, including for protecting the South Kurile Islands, an informed source at the Defence Ministry said.

“Considerable appropriations will be made for improving the infrastructure of military compounds and garrisons of the 18th Artillery Division in the Eastern Military District, which are deployed on the islands of the Kurile Ridge.

The division stationed in the South Kurile Islands has not undergone any organisational changes during military reform in Russia,” the source told Itar-Tass on Wednesday, February 9.
