£42m injection will give 'better eyesight' to Sentry E-3D aircraft at county RAF base

E-3D SentryAirmen aboard a Lincolnshire RAF base's planes will be able to see further and fly in commercial airspace after a three-year £42.7 million upgrade.

The Ministry of Defence has announced aerospace firm Northrop Grumman has been given the contract to install new Mode S features into RAF Waddington's seven Sentry E-3D Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft (AWACS).

This will enable the flying battlefield command centres to identify friends and foes at an increased range, and be available for deployment in countries where the upgrade has become mandatory to fly in controlled areas.
