Japan to Increase Number of Submarines from 16 to 22

Soryu classJapan is reportedly planning to boost its underwater capabilities by increasing the number of submarines used by its naval force.

According to officials from the Japanese Defense Ministry and the Maritime Self-Defense Force on Wednesday six submarines will be added to the current force of sixteen.

The plan is to be reflected in Japan's basic defense program for the fiscal years 2011 to 2015.
