French aircraft carrier returns to port for repairs

Charles de GaulleA French Navy spokesman says aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle has been forced to return to port for repairs on the day it set sail for a four-month mission to support the fight in Afghanistan.

Capt. Hugues d'Argentree says the repairs involve faulty insulation for an electric cabinet in the ship's propulsion system.

He said Thursday the return to port was a "common sense" measure and the repairs are likely to last a few days. He says the carrier will recover lost time at sea and its itinerary is not likely to change.
