First Royal Netherlands Army AMRAAM missile right on target
Last week, at the extreme tip of the Norwegian island of Andøya, air defence artillerymen of the Royal Netherlands Army launched an AMRAAM surface-to-air missile for the first time.
This firing exercise was the culmination of preparations initiated at the missile’s introduction, early in 2009.
The AMRAAM surface-to-air missile was originally designed as an air-to-air missile, i.e. for jet fighters to shoot down enemy aircraft.
Nowadays, however, the missile is also used for firing at aircraft from the ground.
