Virginia class submarines pass Navy hurdle; cleared for full-scale production

Virginia classThe Pentagon has granted the Navy formal approval to continue buying Virginia class submarines from Northrop Grumman Corp.'s Newport News Shipyard and General Dynamics Electric Boat.

After passing a series of high-level operational tests, the Virginia class program reached a benchmark called Milestone III, which authorizes full-scale production of the remaining 16 boats in the class.

Northrop and Electric Boat, which have been building the fast-attack subs in a partnership since 1998, were authorized to build the first 14 of the planned 30-sub class before receiving the Pentagon approval.
