MSDF may refuel vessels off Somalia

Mashuu classThe government is considering dispatching Maritime Self-Defense Force refueling vessels to provide fuel to foreign vessels conducting antipiracy operations off Somalia, according to sources.

The move comes in response to requests from several nations for refueling assistance, and is intended to project the government's willingness to make international contributions after the administration of former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama ended refueling for ships on an antiterrorism operation in the Indian Ocean, the sources said.

However, the "divided Diet" ushered in by this month's House of Councillors election could impede the government's efforts to revise laws necessary for the envisaged measures.
