Top Russian General bids to deploy anti-ICBM missiles in Bulgaria and Romania

S-300PMUAs part of the new potential missile shield strategic partnership between US and Russia, Moscow could propose to the Americans that their own S-300 anti-ICBM (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile) systems be deployed in Bulgaria and Romania, said General Vladimir Dvorkin, previous head of the central research Institute 4 within the Russian defence ministry, cited by Bulgarian media on June 2 2010.

Dvorkin said that any future potential co-operation between the US and Russia in a missile defence shield is not against Russian interests but could be exploited for mutual benefit.

"In order to participate in such a scheme, Russia could propose for S-300 missiles to be deployed in Bulgaria and Romania," he said. He went further to suggest that gradually those missile systems could be replaced with more contemporary S-400 and S-500 variants.
