Replacement for Trident missiles ‘would cost more’

Vanguard-classAn independent think-tank has warned unless the government is willing to dilute Britain’s nuclear deterrent there is no alternative to replacing Trident like-for-like.

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) specialises has published a paper which argues the deeper the immediate budget cuts the Ministry of Defence has to make, the greater the risk of reduced capability without equivalent financial gains.

The coalition government said it is committed to maintaining a deterrent but has agreed the renewal of Trident should be scrutinised to ensure value for money.
