Military aircraft chaos in Staten Island's Clove Lakes Park


A Fleet Week demonstration involving a combat aircraft at Clove Lakes Park got a little too real yesterday, as the vehicle's landing maneuver sent debris and tree limbs hurtling toward spectators, injuring 10.

"Garbage cans were blowing, everything was lifting off the ground -- it was chaos," said Castleton Corners resident Donna Wolven, who saw the large aircraft approach from the east at around 9:15 a.m.. "Emergency people ran over immediately -- it was a very quick response."

Ten people sustained minor cuts and abrasions from debris kicked up by the MV-22 Osprey, a Marine Corps craft that has two rotors and functions as a sort of hybrid of a plane and a helicopter.
