B-52s could get mixed missions

B-52 StratofortressThe B-52 fleets at Barksdale and Minot Air Force bases could come down with mission shift over the next few years, if changes sought by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates come to pass.

n testimony and talks in recent weeks, Gates has said the nation's nuclear enterprise, as its combined missile and bomber force is coded, could downsize a bit with an anticipated update of the last START Treaty with the former Soviet Union.

"Based on recommendations of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we plan to meet the treaty's limits by retaining a triad of up to 420 intercontinental ballistic missiles, 14 submarines carrying up to 240 sea-launched ballistic missiles, and up to 60 nuclear-capable heavy bombers," Gates wrote recently in an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal.
