Launch system woes won't delay carrier

USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78)The controversial new aircraft launching system for the Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier is behind schedule by about seven months after software problems derailed its testing program for nearly three months earlier this year, the Navy said.

Despite the problems, the Navy's program manager for the launch system, Capt. Randy Mahr, said the delay would not affect the delivery of the Ford, which is under construction at Northrop Grumman Corp.'s Newport News shipyard and scheduled to enter the fleet in 2015.

But it's yet another black eye in the development of the equipment, which has been plagued by delays and cost overruns. It also adds to concerns that the system may not be ready for installation by shipyard construction deadlines.
