Canadian frigates built to fight another day

HMCS CalgaryConsidering it uses technology developed when the 386 computer processor was in vogue, HMCS Calgary gets along quite fine.

Crew members watching and listening for potential threats, communicating information to senior officers and aiming and firing the ship’s weaponry help the 1990s frigate continue to play an effective role in a world where terrorism and shore-based threats are more common than Cold War-style confrontations.

Chief Petty Officer Max Michel, Calgary’s combat system engineering chief, knows the ins and outs of the solid-state system used by his ship.
