General election 2010: Labour ditches Trident pledge

Vanguard-classLabour has ditched Gordon Brown's pledge to cut the number of Trident nuclear submarines, a minister has said in an appeal to voters in a key marginal constituency.

The Prime Minister last year said he was prepared to give up one of Britain's four nuclear-armed submarines as part of a "global grand bargain" on disarmament.

However, The Daily Telegraph has learned that Quentin Davies, a defence minister, has promised shipyard workers is committed to keeping four boats.
