The Dutch Council of State, the highest court of administrative law, has ruled that the Environment Ministry was wrong to order the felling of six hectares of woodland near Schinveld in the southern province of Limburg in January 2006.The minister at the time, Sybilla Dekker, ordered the wood cut down to make the approach route to the AWACS base at Geilenkirchen in Germany safer for NATO aircraft. She decided this took priority over the potential increase in noise pollution from the base.
There were large-scale protests against the felling and the wood was occupied for several days both by local people and by the action group Green Front. More than 100 people were arrested.
