Construction begins on Adelaide's $8 billion Air Warfare Destroyers

F-100 ClassSparks are flying at Port Adelaide as work on the $8 billion air warfare destroyers project finally gets to the stage of cutting hard metal.

The ships are being constructed out of huge metal blocks manufactured at three sites - one at Port Adelaide and the others in Victoria and New South Wales - which will then be brought together for assembly at TechPort in Osborne.

At a formal ceremony today to launch the construction phase of the massive project, ASC managing director and chief executive officer Steve Ludlam said the simultaneous construction of AWD blocks in multiple Australian shipyards reflected a truly national commitment to building the three air warfare destroyers.
