The government has released the contents of NATO's official request to the Netherlands to remain active in Afghanistan for longer. Labour (PvdA) is however likely to force the coalition to ask NATO for a revised request.NATO has asked the Netherlands to stay on in Uruzgan with a smaller mission. Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen and Defence Minister Eimert van Middelkoop have sent a copy of the request to the Lower House.
The letter was sent to Premier Jan Peter Balkenende on 4 April. In it, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen gives an assurance that another country will take over the leading role in Uruzgan from the Dutch.
