Dutch worried about noise of new US planes

F-35 Lightning IIDutch Deputy Defence Minister Jack de Vries has ordered a new investigation into the sound pollution caused by the US-built Joint Strike Fighter plane. A number of these planes may be purchased by the Dutch to replace their aging fleet of F-16 fighters.

Rising costs have led to a postponement of the purchase, to which concerns over the sound level of the planes are now being added.

Recent figures compiled by the US Airforce show that the sound at takeoff peaks at 130 dB(A), a level far exceeding the Dutch norms.
