A U.S. aerospace firm is trying to convince the Harper government it makes financial sense to hold a competition for the proposed multibillion-dollar purchase of new fighter jets for Canada's military, rather than enter into a sole-source deal with one of its competitors.Work is underway in the Department of National Defence to seek approval for a sole-source purchase of the Joint Strike Fighter, or JSF, built by Lockheed Martin in the United States.
Some DND officials are concerned that a competition would drag on for too long and because of that Canada would not have new fighter aircraft in place when the current fleet of CF-18s is ready to be retired starting in 2017.
