India has approved the construction of two more nuclear submarines costing Rs 30 billion, as it launched its first nuclear submarine, the INS Arihant, on Sunday in the south Indian port city of Visakhapatnam.
Defence Ministry sources said the construction of the hull for the next submarine was underway at a facility in the Hazira port near Surat, in the Gujarat state.
When completed, two of the three submarines would be ready for deep-sea deployment, while the third would remain on base as back-up, the sources added.
