There are fears today that Britain's new aircraft carriers faced a fight for survival as the project to build them runs £1bn over budget.A leaked memo revealed that a decision to delay the in-service dates of supercarriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales had seen costs spiral.
The government insists the carriers, being partly built in Portsmouth's dockyard, will be delivered – and the first steel cutting is due to take place in Scotland a week today.
