Thailand delays the order for six new Gripens

JAS-39 GripenThailand wants to delay its order for six new Saab Gripen fighter aircraft within a plan to cut defence-related costs by 20 billion Baht (€ 430 million) for the next year, most of which would be saved with the postponement of this order.

The delivery of a first set of six already ordered Gripens is scheduled between 2010 and 2011, while the delay of the new order, initially scheduled for 2013, means that the squadron will have to wait until 2015 to be completed with the new supply of fighters.

Marshal Itthaporn Subhawong, a Thai Air Force officer, quoted by "Bangkok Post", explained: "This affects the potential of the armed forces because they need modern weaponry.
