Australian Navy destroyers closer to construction

SPS Alvaro de Bazan (F-100 Class)The navy's three new air warfare destroyers have moved a step closer to construction with two companies announced as the preferred suppliers of the modules that will make up the ships' hulls.

The Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Alliance has selected NSW-based FORGACS Group and Cairns-based NQEA Australia Pty Ltd to build 70 per cent of the blocks at a cost of about $450 million.

AWD Alliance chief executive officer John Gallacher said the selection of the two preferred suppliers was a major milestone in the $8 billion project.
