On the heels of last week's announcement of a new $14 billion contract for additional Virginia-class submarines, some members of Congress are seeking support from President-elect Barack Obama for producing eight more of the submarines.U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, home to submarine builder Electrict Boat, based in Groton, organized a joint letter with more than 24 House members that asks Obama to back doubling production to two new ships a year, beginning in 2011, one year ahead of the Navy's previous schedule. The letter is scheduled to be sent today.
"As you evaluate current acquisition programs and make the tough decisions ahead, we encourage your strong support for the Virginia-class submarine program — a platform of critical importance to our nation's current and long-term defense," the lawmakers wrote.
