Irish Army faced with 10-year aircraft wait

It will be at least the next decade before the Government even considers acquiring a transport aircraft for the Defence Forces -- despite criticism by a senior Army officer in Chad about the total lack of such aircraft.

The Department of Defence said yesterday that there are no plans to acquire a tactical fixed-wing transport aircraft for the Defence Forces at the present time.

At present the Air Corps has no transport aircraft and has to rely on two Casa planes, bought for maritime patrol and 50 per cent paid for by the EU, for air ambulance and transport tasks while two Government jets are used by Government ministers.
