The controversial third DDG-1000 destroyer was given the nod for funding by the Senate Wednesday, setting the stage for a showdown with the House on whether the $2.6 billion ship will be built.
Two of the new destroyers are already under construction, one at Bath Iron Works and one at Northrop Grumman Corp.'s Pascagoula, Miss.,-based Ingalls Operations. The third DDG-1000, if funded, would be built in Bath.
After Wednesday's 88-8 vote, the Senate Defense Authorization bill now officially includes money for the ship, while the House version of the fiscal year 2009 spending plan does not.
